Aug 27, 2026 by Taylor Berry Should Every Muscle Be at the Same EMS Intensity? When an EMS workout starts, it can be tempting to look at the intensity levels and want everything to match. If the legs are at 60, maybe the abs should be at 60. And if the arms are only at 45, maybe those need to come up too. But your body doesn't really work that way, and neither does EMS intensity. Different muscle groups can respond differently to electrical stimulation. An intensity that feels strong but manageable across the glutes may feel completely different across the abdomen or arms. That doesn't necessarily mean one area is receiving too much or another isn't receiving enough. In fact, one of the most important things to understand about EMS intensity is that the number itself isn't the goal. The goal is finding an appropriate level of stimulation for each area of the body while still being able to perform the workout safely and with control. And once that makes sense, it becomes much easier to understand why having individual control over different muscle groups can be so useful. What does EMS intensity actually mean? EMS works by delivering electrical impulses that stimulate motor nerves and cause the associated muscles to contract. Intensity, sometimes discussed as amplitude in research, influences the strength of the electrical stimulus being delivered. Generally, increasing the stimulation intensity can recruit more motor units and produce a stronger contraction. But that does not mean the best EMS intensity is simply the highest level someone can tolerate. There are other variables involved, too. Research on neuromuscular electrical stimulation has shown that factors including electrode placement, electrode size, pulse characteristics and intensity can all affect the resulting muscle response. This is why it helps to stop thinking about EMS intensity as a score. Getting from 50 to 70 isn't like adding weight to a barbell. And there is no reason to assume that 70 should feel or perform identically across every part of the body. Why does the same EMS intensity feel different across the body? This is probably the part that confuses people the most. The legs feel fine. The abs feel intense. The arms feel somewhere in the middle. Nothing necessarily went wrong. Electrical stimulation is being delivered through electrodes positioned over different parts of the body, and those areas aren't identical. One factor is electrode size. A clinical review of NMES explains that electrode size should be selected according to factors including the size of the target muscle and the desired spread and depth of the current. Larger electrodes spread the current over a greater area, reducing current density, while smaller electrodes concentrate it more heavily. Placement matters, too. The location of an electrode can influence which tissues are stimulated and how the muscle responds. Then there is the person wearing the EMS suit. Everyone has a different tolerance for electrical stimulation, and even within the same person, that tolerance doesn't have to be identical from one area of the body to another. That's actually something WB-EMS researchers account for. Rather than assuming every muscle group should receive one identical intensity, researchers have assessed the maximum tolerable stimulation of individual muscle groups separately. So if the glutes and abs don't feel the same at the same number, don't immediately assume something needs to be fixed. The numbers don't have to match. Should your glutes, abs, arms and legs use different EMS intensity levels? They can. What we don't want to do is give you a chart that says: Glutes: 80Abs: 60Arms: 50Legs: 75 It would look convenient. It also wouldn't be particularly useful. There isn't one scientifically established EMS intensity percentage that everyone should use for each muscle group. The appropriate intensity depends on the individual, the equipment, the stimulation parameters, the area being stimulated and how that person responds to the stimulation. The international WB-EMS guidelines actually recommend repeatedly assessing perceived exertion for each area of stimulation rather than treating whole-body EMS as one uniform intensity. That's an important distinction. Whole-body EMS may stimulate many major muscle groups during the same workout, but "whole body" doesn't mean every part of the body needs to receive identical stimulation. Instead of asking, "How do I get all these numbers to match?" it makes more sense to ask, "How is this particular area responding?" So, how strong should EMS feel? There is no perfect number we can give you here, and we'd be doing you a disservice if we pretended there was. EMS should produce clear stimulation and muscle contraction without turning the workout into a contest to see how much electricity you can tolerate. If the stimulation is so low that you can barely notice what's happening, there may be room to increase it. On the other hand, if the contraction is interfering with your ability to control the movement, causing pain or making it difficult to maintain proper form, that's a reason to bring it down. Somewhere in between is the useful part. You want to be able to feel the muscle working. The contraction should be noticeable and controlled, but the stimulation shouldn't take over the exercise. Research generally supports using sufficiently high, tolerable stimulation when the goal is producing meaningful muscular contractions. But "tolerable" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. More intensity isn't automatically better just because the device allows it. The WB-EMS safety guidelines specifically warn against starting with very high intensities or training to exhaustion during the initial conditioning period. So there is no prize for finishing an EMS workout at the highest possible setting. Why your EMS intensity may change over time Here's another situation that can throw people off. The first few EMS sessions can feel incredibly intense. Then, after some experience, a setting that once felt strong may not feel quite the same. That doesn't automatically mean the EMS suit is losing power. Researchers have actually studied this. In a study of EMS intensity tolerance, participants completed four maximum-intensity WB-EMS tests separated by one week. Maximum intensity tolerance increased across the early sessions before beginning to level off. In other words, there appears to be a familiarization effect. That makes sense when thinking about EMS intensity in the real world. Someone who has trained with EMS for months shouldn't necessarily compare settings with someone who put on an EMS suit for the first time yesterday. It also means your own starting settings aren't necessarily permanent. As you become more familiar with the sensation and your training progresses, you may find that certain muscle groups can comfortably handle a different EMS intensity than they did at the beginning. That progression should happen gradually, though. Should you increase EMS intensity during the workout? You might. Again, the key word is "might." The stimulation can begin to feel different as a session continues. If an area no longer feels like it is receiving sufficient stimulation, a small adjustment may make sense. But that doesn't mean there needs to be an automatic increase every few minutes. Think about what the muscle is doing first. If you're moving well, getting a clear contraction and the stimulation feels appropriately challenging, there isn't a reason to touch the setting simply because the number hasn't changed in five minutes. If it starts feeling too intense, lower it. If one muscle group feels ready for more but another doesn't, there is no reason those two areas need to move together. This is where individual muscle control starts to become much more important than simply having a powerful EMS system. Should the left and right sides use the same EMS intensity? Not necessarily. Most of us aren't perfectly symmetrical. One side may be stronger, one side may feel stimulation differently, or electrode contact may differ slightly depending on fit and positioning. That doesn't mean every difference between the left and right sides represents a muscular imbalance, either. It's better not to diagnose an imbalance based solely on the EMS numbers displayed on an app. Instead, pay attention to how each side responds. If one side feels substantially different, first make sure the suit is fitted properly and the electrodes have good contact. Then adjust based on what you're actually feeling rather than trying to make the screen look symmetrical. And if you're intentionally working on a known strength or movement imbalance, that's something worth approaching as part of the overall training program rather than simply turning one side higher and hoping EMS handles the rest. EMS intensity is only one part of the workout Intensity gets a lot of attention because it's the setting people feel immediately. But EMS is more than an intensity slider. Frequency determines how frequently electrical pulses are delivered. Pulse width affects how long each electrical pulse lasts. Duty cycle controls the relationship between stimulation and recovery periods. Ramp time determines how gradually stimulation increases or decreases. Then you have the actual movement being performed. A squat with EMS isn't the same experience as standing still with EMS. Neither is a lunge, plank, push-up or recovery session. All of these factors work together. That is why changing intensity without considering the rest of the program doesn't tell the whole story. The best EMS setup isn't necessarily the one with the highest intensity. It's the one in which the different settings make sense for what you're actually trying to accomplish. A better way to set your EMS intensity Instead of trying to find the perfect number online, start with your own response. Begin conservatively, especially if you're new to EMS. Give yourself time to understand what the stimulation feels like before increasing it. Then go area by area. Your legs may need one intensity. Your glutes may need another. Your abs may respond strongly at a lower setting. That's okay. Once you've set those initial levels, actually move. A setting that feels perfectly comfortable while standing still can feel different once you start squatting, lunging or performing another exercise. Make adjustments based on the workout you're doing, not just the sensation you felt before it started. And keep checking in during the session. The updated international WB-EMS guidelines recommend checking the adequacy of stimulation repeatedly for each area during a session. That's a much better way to think about intensity than setting one number at the beginning and forgetting about it. Most importantly, give yourself time to progress. Someone else's intensity isn't your goal. Even your own intensity from last month doesn't have to be your goal today. The number isn't the goal If your glutes are at one intensity and your abs are at another, that's fine. Really. EMS intensity isn't about creating a row of matching numbers on a screen. It's about finding an appropriate level of stimulation for the muscle, the person and the workout. Some areas may tolerate more stimulation than others. Your tolerance can change as you gain experience. Electrode size and placement can affect how stimulation feels. And intensity is only one variable among frequency, pulse width, duty cycle, ramp time and the movement you're performing. Once you understand that, individual muscle control stops looking like an extra feature and starts making a lot more sense. That's the approach behind TitanBody.
